The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is a multi-tiered chemistry competition for high school students. The top four students of the national competition represent the United States in the annual International Chemistry Olympiad. Please see the main ACS USNCO website for more general information.

During the month of March, students from the local level will be given 110 minutes to take a 60-question multiple-choice exam.

Student Eligibility

  • Students must be U.S. citizens or legal, permanent residents of the United States (green card holders) to take the U.S. national examination.
  • High school students who will graduate no earlier than spring of the year that they participate in the competition are eligible/
Students must be under 20 years of age on the first of July of the year of the competition.
  • All students who participate in the local competition will be recognized and presented with a certificate that they can include in their college portfolio. Students who sit for the national level of the competition receive an additional certificate for national nominees and a commemorative lapel pin. Approximately 150 top-scoring students receive recognition for outstanding performance at the national level.
